One of the students at the Presbyterian community center said, “There aren't enough beautiful places in Roanoke because people destroy them. I like places where I can be quiet and reflective.”

Immediate Impact

Near the intersection of Tazewell and 11th street is a steeply sloped piece of land that is covered with trees and a small staircase that leads to the top. The community could use it as a possible place to showcase local artists, eventually becoming a contemplative space where people can go to enjoy art and nature.

This initiative can start by collaborating with existing art focused initiatives to paint the stair and retaining wall with fun colorful murals as well as a community clean up of the plot. Setting the space for artists to share their work.

Long-Term Impact

Looking forward the area can be transformed with a winding ramp that turns between the trees following along the slope of the area. This would make the highest viewpoint on the site accessible to all. A sculpture garden can begin to emerge around the ramp that people can view as they walk through, making a meaningful and creative destination space on Tazewell.
